Really Roughing It .... 5 Star style

May 24 - 27, 2013 - Humboldt Redwoods State Park - Hidden Springs Campground - Weott California

Memorial Day 2013
Appropriate holiday name for a weekend that will be forever in our memory as the time we realized that not all parking is created equal.
Rob had planned a fun filled weekend with his family from Oregon to come camping with us.  Rob and I took off Friday morning for the 5 hour drive north at around 11.  We hit a little traffic and a little construction but nothing too bad, got into the park around 5pm.  We pulled in and the ranger didn't really know where our site was, or really how to get to it.  I think it was the first weekend that this particular campground was open for the year.  I knew it was going to be a little difficult because I had read on other blogs how there were large trees, you had to go slow around them, and it MIGHT be hard if you are like 28 footer or something.  I did think it was a little strange how there was virtually no discussion of trailers/RVs in this Hidden Springs Campground.  I could never have planned for it to be THIS stressful.
So we are going through the campground... and we go up and up and up more hills... the FJ is pulling the little trailer well.  Then we go up the final hill to our little (very LITTLE) campsite.  The site is on the right hand side of a one way road pointing downhill (if that makes any sense!).  We get out and asses the situation.  hummmm.... how are we possibly going to do this?  Rob starts to back down the road, and tries to turn back into the spot, but there is no way, there is not enough turning radius and I am very afraid he is going to jack-knife in the middle of the road.  Tries a little more... we try to turn around... no space to be able to turn around.  Then a helpful fellow camper comes out and says you need to go the wrong way "down" the road then back in.  Well we knew that was what we needed to do, but there was no way to turn around!   We ended up going all the way out of the park.... and redoing the loop backwards (crossing our fingers we didn't run into anyone coming the other way!)  So we came up to our campsite again, now pointing downhill and Rob tries to back into the spot on this big incline.... pedal to the floor the trailer barely moves... the clutch in the FJ starts to really smell!  Slowly the FJ pushes the trailer back into the tiny spot.  PHEEW... this took us over an hour!  I am done!... then Rob says we really need to level left/right... I am like NO WAY! did you see how hard that little FJ just worked.  No more... the FJ is done for the weekend!  But we did it and got level.  Now that we parked, we got everything unloaded and set up camp.  Much more stuff for this weekend as we had a total of 9 people and it was much more outdoor cooking then we normally do in the trailer.
This was our first weekend without ANY hookups.  We brought one of our generators and it worked GREAT (after Rob changed the oil with a paper plate and filled the gas with a plastic cup.. sure that is up to code!)   We learned that our batteries with NOTHING consciously turned on (no lights, no heaters, etc.)  will last less than 12 hours, doesn't sound quite right (we will have that looked into).  Because we learned that the fridge (running on propane) needs a little electricity to run the thermometer to stay cool, if it does not get power it turns off!
We threw together some hamburgers and had some wine that we picked up in Mendocino on the way up and had a great first night in Humboldt.
On Saturday the rest of the family joined us for lots of food, drinks and some hiking!
Monday morning I heard this ping ping ping.... ahhh the sound of rain... so nice to hear when you are warm and cozy... OH WAIT all of our family is in tents outside... as well as all of our stuff!  Monday morning was a bit hectic picking everything up and getting everyone dried off.
Looking forward to making this an annual family camping trip... but maybe next time somewhere a bit warmer and dryer!
NOTE for next time... the worst site had to be the one we were in for trailers.  It was site 58HS another bad one would be 56HS.  64 and 66 looked a bit better.  Some of the markers on the sites were trailers and some were RVs.  I see that on the reserve America site it does not distinguish between RVs/Trailers (like site 58 shows for both)  but I think we learned that here you would want to choose an RV site (they were longer and flatter).  38HS looked like a really good site... it was back off the road, but had an intersection in front of it so you could back in easily.  We drove by the other campgrounds they were more out in the open but seemed to be much less of a challenge!

Another quick trip to Mt. Madonna

May 17, 2013 - Mt Madonna - Watsonville, CA

I was on a business trip in San Diego during the week and got home on Friday afternoon.  We had dropped off the trailer last week to get our new bumper put on, so we had to go pick it up on Friday.  Instead of just hauling it back home we decided to go to Mt Madonna for Friday night.  We LOVE Mt. Madonna!  My flight got in too late for me to go with Rob to pick up the trailer, so some how he hitched it up all by himself at the tight quarters at the dealership.  THEN... he drove to Mt. Madonna, backed it in and unhitched all by himself... AND got dinner ready!  I drove up after my flight landed and Rob had a fire going and the table cloth out all ready and waiting for me!  Now I expect this every weekend!

Costonoa KOA.. those plastic wedges actually do something!

May 10 - 12, 2013 Costonoa KOA - Pescadero

I just looked at Tripadvisor to get the name right, I am really surprised this place had such mixed reviews.  It was the first time this year when we did a full weekend, the days are getting longer and work is not AS crazy now so we could take off at a decent time on Friday.  We headed over the hill and went north to Pescadero!  We got in a little late and it was CHILLY, but still light out.  We had requested a spot that would back towards the water (doesn't really matter there is no view from any of the spots, the water is across the freeway!) But we were on the first loop which did seem to be the best.  Of course we were the last to pull in so everyone was out in their chairs watching us.  Our tiny little airstream seems to gather attention wherever we go!  Rob did a great job of backing in (for sure was not one of the most difficult places).  Then he decided that we needed to be leveled right/left. like really leveled (2 blocks of leveling!)  Kind of surprised at a $100 a night place you would need to be that jacked up!  They could do a better job of paving!

Anyways we got the blocks down, Rob pulled the trailer forward, looked level... so we started to unhitch.  I meanwhile am getting the inside ready and going about my chores when I hear this big CRASH and SCREEEEEEETCH... umm "Rob what was that?" I calmly ask not knowing the severity of the situation! I come outside to find Rob with his arms crossed and a perplexed look on his face.  he said "umm we rolled back off the blocks and the only thing holding the airstream is the chains on the FJ"  and now I see the situation and our hitch stand is a little bent and has been scraped a good 12 inches on the pavement.  So we back away from the situation and think.  Ok we put those plastic flimsly looking wedges behind the tires (now the airstream can go no further back).  We back the FJ up and relive the tension on the chains, then we rehitch and go back up on the blocks to level and relive the pressure on the hitch stand.  All of this with no yelling or screaming.  Lesson learned, those little wedge things actually do something!  Not sure how great of a night of sleep I had, as I was constantly worried we were going to roll off the blocks again... but we didn't and it all worked out.

We spent Saturday in downtown Pescadero.  We started at a Goat Farm, then headed to lunch, and picked up some of the famous Artichoke Garlic bread and a tri-tip to grill for dinner.  It was a great weekend and we will for sure be back here!

Opening Day

May 4, 2013 Seattle

We made our way up to Seattle to celebrate the opening day of boating season with my family.  The weather was perfect (a rarity in Seattle in May!)   We participated in the Wilson Cup but unfortunately did not win, but none the less a fun time was had by all (especially the Marines that joined us!)

Our crew... minus Rob taking the picture (where is that tripod when you need it!)

But don't worry Rob... I got your picture too!

Beautiful day in Seattle

Coyote Lake-Harvey Bear Ranch County Park

April 20, 2013 - Coyote Lake-Harvey Bear Ranch County Park - Gilroy

Headed out on another Saturday morning adventure for a night of camping.  It was our last Santa Clara County park to try that has hook ups.  This was much better than Sanborn but not nearly as good as Mt. Madonna.  I bet it gets H-O-T here in the summer cause it was pretty hot when we were here, and it was April.  We tried to do a little walk next to the water, but the path kind of ended, so the last bit was a little treacherous, but we made it.  We could hear the hogs grunting in the bushes.  There were a few people with boats out on the water.  It is kind of funny because you are not allowed to swim in the lake, but you can water ski and inner-tube?

One night (and last night) at Sanborn-Skyline County Park

March 30, 2013 - Sanborn-Skyline County Park - Saratoga

We checked out another one of the Santa Clara County parks that has hook ups.  Well this one was horrible.  It was literally a parking lot and the weather was not great.  But we made the best of it, it was Easter weekend!  We did a small hike, but Rob had thrown out his back the weekend before, so I was very leery to venture far from the airstream.  Rob made an amazing pasta for dinner and then we had an Easter brunch 5 Star Streaming style with a Schramsberg Blanc de Noirs!
